Another week passed. Everybody was becoming a little restless by now. However, word came that they would be permitted to walk in the Pemberley gardens once more provided they did not come into contact with anybody outside. This alleviated the boredom somewhat as Darcy and Lizzy took walks around the beautiful gardens with Mr and Mrs Collins.

“Are Mr and Mrs Wickham permitted to enjoy the gardens too, Mr Darcy?” asked Charlotte.

“Yes, but only at certain designated times to ensure that we do not meet them by accident.”

“I don’t quite understand why we must be isolated from them?” said Collins. “For, we are in the same building are we not?”

Darcy had told them that Wickham and Lydia must remain in the far wing in order to avoid the possibility of becoming infected. He and Lizzy knew it was simpler than that. It was merely to keep Wickham out of his (Darcy’s) sight.

Charlotte lingered behind the others. Lizzy let Darcy and Collins go on ahead and joined her.

“How are you today, Charlotte? We haven’t had much chance to speak these last few days.”

“To speak the truth, Lizzy, I was rather relieved when it was announced that we would have to remain another three weeks.”

“But why? Aren’t you looking forward to going home again?”

“With Mr Collins you mean? A life without intimacy or physical love? No, Lizzy, I was relieved because it meant I may be able to spend some time with you alone again. If you know what I mean.”

Lizzy linked arms with Charlotte and they continued to walk slowly among the shrubs and flowers.

“I know exactly what you mean, Charlotte. Perhaps you could come to my bed chamber this afternoon.”

“You mean it, Lizzy?”

“Of course, my love. I haven’t forgotten what happened there a few days ago.”

Charlotte hadn’t forgotten either. She had thought of little else since that day.

Lizzy stopped for a moment to inspect a pretty shrub.

“Nice foliage,” she said.

“Thank you,” said Charlotte and blushed charmingly.

“What? Oh, no I meant this shrub.”

“Oh, I see. Sorry, I thought you meant…”

Lizzy gave a throaty laugh.

“Mind you,” she said, “that’s true also. You had very pretty foliage, as it were.”

Charlotte lowered her head and blushed again. She also smiled at Lizzy’s compliment.

“After lunch?” said Charlotte. “my husband always goes for a nap after lunch.”

“Won’t you feel uncomfortable knowing he’s next door?”

“No. Firstly, he’s a heavy sleeper. Secondly, it serves him right, having his wife a few mere yards away enjoying carnal love while he snores away in ignorance.”

“Very well. I’ll find some errand or other to occupy Darcy for an hour or so.”

They increased their pace to catch up with their husbands.

“And, Lizzy?” said Charlotte.

“Yes.”

“It’s my turn to please you this time. Remember?”

“Of course. And I’m sure you’ll please me very much.”

When the two couples returned to the house, a light luncheon had already been served in the dining room. All ate and drank in moderation except Mr Collins who ate an enormous amount. Charlotte didn’t mind because the more he ate the more weary he became.
